Your doctor can refer you to the right organisation and practitioners.
 

WHAT ROLE DOES MY GP PLAY?

Effective treatments for PTSD involve psychological therapymedication, or a combination of both. You can discuss with your doctor which option you think may be the best treatment for you.
 

WHAT ABOUT THERAPY

Recovery from trauma often involves working with a therapist. There are a range of therapies which have proved to be effective in treating posttraumatic mental health conditions, and the length of therapy can depend on your situation. These therapies often involve processing the traumatic event itself and reducing trauma-associated distress, alongside improving the quality of day-to-day life, and helping to cope with difficult situations. When you seek help, consider asking your GP to refer you to a therapist who is trained in evidence-based approaches, which are more likely to help you recover.

 

WHAT ABOUT MEDICATIONS?

Following a traumatic incident, engaging in trauma-focussed therapy is recommended. However, medications may be considered when an individual is not ready to engage in therapy, they have additional mental health issues such as depression, or they have not benefited from trauma-focussed therapy. When medication is considered, the first choice would be selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), however this decision will be guided by your GP and/or mental health professional.
